La Scie est le projet d’enregistrement de Samuel Gougoux. Basé à Montréal depuis 2017, Gougoux est principalement reconnu pour son implication en tant que musicien accompagnateur et compositeur dans divers projets.
L’étendu musicale de son travail est large, passant du rock (Corridor [Subpop, Bonsound], Hélène Barbier [Bonsound]) à l’expérimental (Kee Avil [Constellation], VICTIME [Mothland]), à la chanson (Sieste sur l’oreille droite, avec Klô Pelgag et Joseph Mihalcean [Secret City]), au folk rock (Jonathan Personne [Bonsound]) ou encore à la pop (Lysandre [Chivi Chivi]).
Une autre influence sur le travail de Gougoux est son implication dans la musique à l’image. Il est engagé comme compositeur sur plusieurs court-métrages (Gender Reveal, de Mo Matton, La vie heureuse d’Amélie Hardy […]) ainsi qu’une websérie (Ça prend pas la tchass à Papineau, pour lequel il remporta le prix de la meilleure bande sonore au Rio Webfest). Le travail cinématographique influence nécessairement son approche à la composition.
C’est l’agencement de ces diverses expériences qui permet la formation d’un projet canalisé, libre mais toutefois sobre, à l’image du musicien. La scie permet d’aborder des zones plus personnelles et réflexives qui n’apparaissent pas nécessairement dans ses collaborations. Ce travail pourrait plaire aux fans de Mount Eerie, Julia Holter ou encore Scott Walker.
La Scie is the recording project of Samuel Gougoux. Based in Montreal since 2017, Gougoux is mostly known for his work as a touring and studio musician as well as a composer across a wide range of projects.
His experience ranges from rock (Corridor [Sub Pop, Bonsound], Hélène Barbier [Bonsound]) to experimental music (Kee Avil [Constellation], VICTIME [Mothland]). But also ventured in singer/songwriter (Sieste sur l’oreille droite, with Klô Pelgag and Joseph Mihalcean [Secret City]) as well as folk rock (Jonathan Personne [Bonsound]) and pop (Lysandre [Chivi Chivi]).
Gougoux has also been commissioned as a composer for several short films (Gender Reveal, by Mo Matton; La vie heureuse d’Amélie Hardy […]) as well as a web series (Ça prend pas la tchass à Papineau, for which he won the award for Best Soundtrack at the Rio Webfest). This cinematic work naturally informs and shapes his compositional approach.
It is the convergence of these diverse experiences that gives rise to La Scie, a free yet restrained project, mirroring the musician himself. The project allows Gougoux to explore a more personal and introspective musical territory that does not necessarily surface in his collaborative work. This project may appeal to fans of Mount Eerie, Julia Holter, or Scott Walker. The album was created entirely solo, from start to finish, over a period of three years.
