With its generous runtime of 10 minutes and 51 seconds, “Ritornello at Love’s End”—the title and closing track of Rouzbeh Shadpey’s debut LP—attempts, and ultimately fails, to synthesize the album’s arc. Sonic elements from across the record resurface in its final movement, less triumphant reprise than repetition compulsion. The track opens with a pang, then recedes into a lull until the end of its first third, when a voice exhales it agape. Oh God, what can I say? The question lingers unanswered as the music turns into itself, struggling against its own form.
